Taoreed Lagbaja was born on 28 February 1968 in Irepodun, Western State, Nigeria (now in Osun State). He died on 5 November, 2024 in Lagos, Nigeria after undisclosed illness as announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja was a Nigerian Army lieutenant general who was the Chief of Army Staff of Nigeria. Lagbaja was appointed Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023 by President Bola Tinubu.
He spent his early life in Osogbo where he attended the prominent St Charles Grammar School and Local Authority Teachers College. Taoreed Lagbaja was admitted into the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987 as a member of the 39th Regular Course.

Taoreed Lagbaja: Early Life
Lagbaja was born on 28 February 1968 in Irepodun, Western State, Nigeria. Taoreed spent his early life in Osogbo where he attended the prominent St. Charles Grammar School and Local Authority Teachers College. Lagbaja begin his military journey in 1987 at the Nigerian Defence Academy. In 1992, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps, swiftly proving himself as a capable leader.
He has served as a commander in both the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion. Taoreed Lagbaja played important roles in major security operations, like Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in the Southeast, and Operation Forest Sanity in Kaduna and Niger States.

Taoreed Lagbaja joined the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987 as part of the 39th Regular Course. On September 19, 1992, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps. From 1992 to 1995, Lagbaja served as a platoon commander in the 93 Battalion. Then, from 1995 to 2001, Taoreed was a platoon commander in the 72 Special Forces Battalion.
In 2001, Lagbaja obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Geography from the Nigerian Defence Academy. Taoreed later pursued a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies at the US Army War College.
In 2008, he attended the Military Observers Course on Peacekeeping at the Nigerian Army School of Infantry in Jaji from February to May. Later, from June to August 2010, he took the ECOWAS Standby Force Battalion Command Post Course at the Peacekeeping Centre in Bamako, Mali.
Taoreed Lagbaja served as Commander of the 9 Brigade in Ikeja, Lagos State, and the 2 Brigade in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Before his latest role, Lagbaja was the General Officer Commanding the 82 Division from March 2021 to August 2022 and the 1 Division from August 2022 to June 2023.
He began his career as a second lieutenant and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general in July 2023.
